PostSubject: Shotguns, an hit or an miss?   Wed Apr 03, 2013 9:36 am

as usual im doing this on my phone at work. Treat # as line change as this forum dont like my enter key. I will edit when i get home. #

Shotgun, what is your take on this boomstick of doom? Personaly i never use it. The main thing for me is the play style i have with the classes that can use shotguns, the specialist and the assault. #

for the specialist its the spray and pray that works best for me. (or rather spray and aim) keep the other fellows heads down and make them pay if they stick out. The large magazine is wounderfull when you have to deal with several persons at once. I dont use scopes at all, wich makes its somewhat hard to aim on long ranges but quite easy in short ranges. #
Now the shotgun in this roll, what can it do? I can keep folks head down for sure, however its still only 7-8 bullets (10 with later shotguns) and when thats is over they can easy overtake me when reloading. It cannot do long range in a good way. And while it can do horrible damage at close range you have to make darn sure that you hit with that first shot because you often dont get another one. #

i treat the assault as a semi sniper. Spread confusion and or bullets trough the heads of the ones that pops up. And with 30 rounds it does not matter if i miss the first because the handeling is good. And if they are upclose i can use auto fire. The shotgun still have the same problem it had with the specialist. #

So, for me the shotgun does not look good on paper and when used its only a nishe use. is there no broader use for the shotgun?

(disclaimer, this is how i feel about the shotgun and i dont care if you use it or not. Use what YOU feel is best for you)
ps this blasted forum is out toget me! Now it dont want to post this becuase the topic is to short. Ghaaaa! Allright topic change...

I feel shotguns are quite good, but only for a few enemies at the time. Even with an autoshottie (that is, a semi-automatic one), you can only really take on two enemies in succession. My main strategy for my Specialist's shotgun (M1014 AE) is to rush, use Blackout, then slide, and shoot some enemies while theyre disabled. But I can only get two at most, because by the time I've deployed the EMP, moved into a crouch and aimed at the enemy, I can often only fire two shots before the third one can fire again. This low fire rate means that even against one target, you have to make the first shot count- something you can't do at anything more than about 5m.

This 'make the shot count' thing means that you've got to take things slower, which is not an issue with a fully automatic weapon (if I had a Para, then I think my shotgun would be forgotten quickly).

The shotgun does have a pretty niche use, as you said. To my knowledge, there are two good ways to use them: run around at close quarters (with good ready times and a way to disable the enemy if possible), and to hide behind a wall at a joke point, then pop out and fire when enemies come near.

But even with all that considered, there's still little you can do in this game that's as satisfying as running, sliding into an enemy AEGIS shield, firing your boomstick and getting the kill before you've even finished sliding ^^

I kinda like mine.
Obviously, a LMG or an AR is more awesome after the third or so round of autofire, because it keeps shooting and has a reasonably large magazine.
But also sometimes I like being able to hand out lightening-quick insta-death with my M500 (see weapons thread for complete build), and for psychological warfare, there is very little that is as scary as the silence of reloading after the BOM-BOM-BOM of a semiautoshotgun somewhere close.

Yes they are tricky to use. But boi are they devastating when used properly.
